Lafayette vs. Penn
September 7, 2013
EASTON, Pa. (9/07/13) The 2013 Lafayette football season started with a bang as Matt Smalley returned the opening kickoff 98 yards to set a new school record. Sacred Heart would respond right away with a three play, 81-yard drive to knot the game up at seven. The game would remain close deep into the fourth quarter.
With 3:08 on the clock and trailing 23-17, the Leopards put together a four-play, 72-yard drive. Zach Zweizig completed three straight passes to three different receivers. He found Demetrius Dixon for an 18-yard gain, followed by a 22-yard catch by Mark Ross. Then, Justin Adams caught a ball and stepped out of bounds at the Sacred Heart 12-yard line. Zweizig handed the ball off to Ross Scheuerman who hit a big hole on the opposite side of a blitzing linebacker for an easy score that put Lafayette ahead 24-23 with 2:02 left on the clock.
The Pioneers started a controversial drive on their own 21. QB R.J. Noel found Tyler Dube for a nine-yard pickup on first down and another time for 10 yards. Coming out of a second timeout, Lafayette appeared to close out the game, as DeOliver Davis intercepted Noel at the 22-yard line. The Leopards, however, were flagged for roughing the passer, negating the turnover.
Final Score: Sacred Heart 26, Lafayette 24.
