EASTON, Pa.- Lafayette led first-place American for most of the regular-season finale, but the Eagles rallied late to escape with a 58-54 decision.
The Leopards started the game on a 7-3 run and, after an American bucket, Sarah McGorry connected from deep to close out a 7-1 run that put Lafayette on top, 14-6. The Eagles ran off the next eight to knot the score The club traded buckets for the remainder of the period, with the Leopards heading into halftime leading, 27-26.
Emily Homan scored the first four points of the second half to extend the Leopards_ lead to 31-26. The clubs began to trade baskets at that point until five straight from McGorry extended the lead to 42-35.
American made another push when a high-angled three-pointer from Ti_Asia McGeorge banked its way home to cut to margin all the way down to 48-47 with six minutes to go. Lafayette stretched the edge back to 54-50, but the Leopards then went cold and Lisa Strack ran off six straight to give the Eagles a 56-54 lead with 1:26 left. After an empty trip for the Leopards, Melissa Downey stole the ball with 9.6 seconds left. Downey got a good look from the wing but couldn_t find the mark and the Eagles escaped with the win.
