WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (9/8/12) _ Lafayette_s concerted effort on defense held William & Mary to 197 yards of total offense in a 17-14 win in the Leopards_ season opener at Zable Stadium.

The defense held William & Mary to 84 rushing yards and 113 yards in the air. Conversely, the Lafayette offense churned out 301 yards, 189 from the arm of Andrew Shoop who was 18-34 with a touchdown and no interceptions. Shoop hit eight receivers for at least 15 yards, including four to Mike Duncan and Ross Scheuerman. On the ground, the Leopards had 112 yards, 66 from Vaughn Hebron and 37 from Scheuerman.

Lafayette scored one touchdown in the first quarter courtesy of Hebron, before an 80-minute lightning delay in which the officials cleared the field. The lengthy delay didn_t derail the Tribe, who knotted it up 7-7 at the half. The rain proved to be no trouble for the defense, as James Coscia forced a fumble that Shane Black recovered. The Lafayette offense transformed the turnover into a 9-play, 48-yard scoring drive over the next 3:12. Shoop took the snap at the 18 and completed a 3rd-and-15 pass to Mike Duncan for his first career touchdown. Swerdlow added insurance points in the fourth quarter with a 34-yard field goal, but the Tribe kept it interesting with an eight-play, 80-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown with 1:48 remaining. Scheuerman recovered the ensuing onside kick to give the Leopards their first win of the season.
